Little Italy

Once the sprawling home of much of New York City's Italian population, Little Italy has become more of a tourist destination than an ethnic enclave. Previously, Little Italy spread from Canal Street north to Houston, but now its borders are limited to about four city blocks. Still, Little Italy is worth visiting for delicious imported Italian groceries and to see the Old St. North of Little Italy, or NoLita, was coined in the 1990s to give the up-and-coming area more cache. It has since attracted a young and trend-setting clientele of artists and professionals who have also gravitated toward neighboring Little Italy. Within recent years, boutiques, galleries, cafes and nightclubs have sprung up, as have several mid-size apartment buildings. All this activity has resulted in a stronger neighborhood identity.
