Neighborhood Guide

Upper West Side

Manhattan’s Upper West Side extends from 59th to 110th Streets west of Central Park and is recognized as a diverse cultural area. It is home to many families and young professionals. Many have migrated to this area to enjoy the pre-war family-sized apartments, brownstones, walk-ups, and extravagant new condominium buildings. Residents with kids will find excellent private schools in this area and will benefit from easy access to both Riverside and Central Park. Cultural buffs will be smitten by the nearness of Lincoln Center, The Museum of Natural History, The New York Historical Society and The Manhattan Children's Museum. There are numerous unique boutiques, specialty food stores, eclectic restaurants (many having kid’s menus), and trendy bars on the upper west side. It is a neighborhood of mixed cultures of varied ages and income backgrounds. The Upper West Side is bounded on the south by 59th Street, Central Park to the east, and the Hudson River to the west. Its northern boundary has historically been 110th Street, which fixes the neighborhood alongside Central Park.

The Upper West Side pulses with attractions and amenities, with continuously opening bars, restaurants, comedy clubs and gyms, attracting socially conscious and artistic residents. Residents can enjoy the quiet and relaxed atmosphere of quiet streets like Riverside Drive or walk along Broadway, where the streets are hopping day and night. The Upper West Side attracts a mixture of families, single professionals, and seniors who can go out to eat in some of the city’s finest venues, sip coffee in the trendiest cafes, browse fashionable stores, or venture into Central Park to enjoy an afternoon of athletic activity or people-watching.

Much of the housing is pre-war, most buildings feature doormen. Few of the apartments are condos. There are many skyscraper apartment buildings, but they intermingle with the old-fashioned walkups that can be found throughout the neighborhood. The Upper West Side is home to many Manhattan landmarks, from Lincoln Center, to the Dakota, to the Ansonia, and more.
